App or responsive website — when is the site enough?
When a responsive website solves the problem and when an app is more realistic — without starting from the technology.
Many people ask for an app when the real problem is that the website is slow, awkward on a phone, or cannot cover one important action. A responsive site and an app are not a hierarchy. They solve different problems.
The website is enough when this is true
- Users mostly arrive from search, email, or social media.
- The job is to present, book, buy, or look up information.
- The data needs to be available without installing software.
- Updates should appear immediately, without store releases.
An app makes sense when this is true
- The user needs to do the same job repeatedly, often outside a browser.
- Camera, location, notifications, or offline use matter.
- Staff or guests need a tool that is always at hand.
- The service should be a lasting part of daily use, not a one-off visit.
The cost is different for a reason
A custom website starts with us at 80 hours. A focused first app release starts at 160 hours because of the backend, device testing, and App Store and Google Play releases. If the website solves the problem, the app is a more expensive path to the same result. If the app is necessary, you are paying for a different surface — not just a smaller screen.
