Headless WordPress with Next.js: when is it worth it?

The benefits, trade-offs, and right conditions for a custom Next.js website using WordPress as a headless content platform.

In a headless setup, WordPress manages content while a custom frontend — such as Next.js or Vue — renders the website. Editors retain a familiar CMS, while design, performance, and frontend functionality are no longer constrained by a conventional WordPress theme.

When the headless route is strong

  • When the website needs a bespoke experience or complex functionality.
  • When the same content must serve a website, app, or other channels.
  • When performance, accessibility, and technical SEO are important.
  • When the website must integrate with several operational systems.

It is not automatically simpler or cheaper

Headless architecture adds an API layer, preview workflow, deployment process, and two system components to operate. A conventional platform may be more sensible for a simple brochure site. The value appears when flexibility, performance, or custom functionality justify the additional technical responsibility.

The right decision starts with content and operations

Before choosing technology, define who updates content, what data moves in and out, which journeys matter commercially, and who owns operations after launch. Novamedia completes this analysis before design and development begin.
